Students at St Ninians’s have the opportunity to take part in the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award. The award is not academic and is open to everyone.

There are 3 levels to the award: Bronze, Silver and Gold.

Each level consists of 4 sections; volunteering, physical, skill and expedition. There is also a residential section for the gold award.

The volunteering section involves students working in their communities helping others.

The physical section involves participating in a sport and making progress.

The skill section involves participating in an activity and making progress.

The expedition section involves a journeying (usually by foot) to a campsite and spending the night, preparing a hot meal and completing the aim of their expedition. The expedition is unaccompanied, however, the groups are met by their supervisor during the weekend and have a contact number for emergencies.

Most students will start off at the Bronze level in year 10 before moving onto Silver and Gold if they wish.

Students are also given the opportunity for direct entry to silver in the 6th form as part of the enrichment program.

Award certificates for Bronze and Silver are presented at an annual ceremony at the Gaiety theatre in September.

Gold certificates are presented in the presence of HRH The Earl of Wessex at St James’ Palace (London), The Palace of Holyroodhouse (Edinburgh) or Hillsborough Castle (Northern Ireland).
