Members of our student leadership team, Adam Daugherty and Dominic Hubble joined Mr. Coole in attending the Beating the Retreat ceremony at the Governor's House on the evening of 4th July. Adam and Dominic met with the Lieutenant Governor, Sir John Lorimer and were joined by invited guests, dignitaries and representatives from the other island secondary schools.

The Beating Retreat ceremony finds its roots way back in 1690 when the ceremony used to signify the disengagement of British troops and an end to a battle at sunset. The modern ceremony consists of a marching military band followed by a ceremonial lowering of the union flag.

On the Isle of Man the ceremony traditionally takes place at the Lieutenant Governor’s residence the evening before Tynwald Day and this year the Royal Marines were the military band on display.
