We see assessment as an integral part of teaching and learning, and it is inextricably linked to our curriculum.

There are three broad types of assessment that we use in school: Baseline; Summative, Formative

In addition awarding bodies (exam boards) use two types of assessment: Examinations and Non Examined Assessments (NEA). More details about these processes can be found the Exams and NEA section.

Baseline Assessment

Baseline assessments help to understand where students are at before they begin their studies. They can provide infomration about prior knowledge and also provide valuable insights into students' abilities, areas of stengths and if they would benefit from any additional support or intervention. Baseline assessments take place at the start of Year 7 and towards the end of Year 9.

Summative Assessment

Summative assessment provide a measure of what students have learned over a period of time. They aim to determine how well students have mastered the subject matter that has been taught.

There are a mininmum of two pieces of summative assessment per subject/course per year. The results of which are reported home through our reporting programme.

In addition subejct areas may carry out other summative assessments, for example at the end of a topic, the results of these assessments are shared directly with students.

Formative Assessment

Formative assessment is the active monitoring of the understanding students have of their learning. It takes place in most lessons, planned as a natural part of the lesson.

Teachers use a wide variety of activities and techniques, depending upon the subject matter being studied.

The feedback teachers get from these activities influences how the lesson (and subsequent lessons) proceeds or if an individual requires additional support or extenision task.
