The senior basketball team retained the IOM Schools' Shield earlier this term, following an impressive unbeaten season, with league wins against Ramsey, Ballakermeen, QEII and Castle Rushen, and Oliver Hamilton scoring a slam dunk in the final league game, a feat rarely seen in school-boy basketball. Other notable performances from captain Jack Wilkinson, Rowan Coulter, Raf Turla and Evan O’Dea secured a semi-final match against Ramsey, in which the Saints came out victorious to book their place in this year’s final.
The final was played at The Roundhouse in front of a good crowd of, amongst others, all those involved in the SNHS Junior and Intermediate basketball teams. We played a Ballakermeen side that had seen off a strong QEII team in their semi-final. The game started slowly, but the Saints soon started scoring regularly, and some excellent work in defence from Jack, Oliver, Micah Clarricoats and Sam Williams soon started to increase the points gap. Some excellent long-range scores from Samson Shimmin and contributions from Gabe Thatcher, Dylan Evans, Darwin Gilmore and Finlo Hawkins saw the game start to get away from Ballakermeen, who never gave up. In the end, there were some well taken scores from Evan, Raf and Rowan with captain Jack standing out as the MVP with superb play both in attack and defence, the Saints ran out 92-26 winners and are deserving Champions!
Well done to all involved this season, they’ve been a joy to work with and we are looking forward to seeing what’s to come from this group, as most are still in Y11!
