The Senior Boys Football team got off to a winning start to the new season with a comfortable 4-0 win against local rivals Ballakermeen. In a repeat of last year’s final, the two Douglas schools kicked off the new season, with St. Ninian’s looking resplendent in their new shirts – a massive thank you to MSN Roofing & Scaffolding Ltd for your very generous sponsorship!
The game started well for the Saints with the home side having much of the possession and creating a couple of early chances for Eric Hill and Caleb Hewgill. The first real opening came following a cross from Chester Bell that hit an unwitting BHS defender’s hand and the (excellent) referee had no choice but to award a penalty. Captain Deaglan Blake stepped up and had his penalty saved before he then hit the post with the rebound! However, the deadlock was broken only a few minutes later when ex-Ballakermeen student, Ben Ramsay, struck the ball sweetly into the top corner from the edge of the box. A second goal soon followed when Hewgill powered in a brilliant header to the top corner, directly from a corner kick.
The second half was very similar with SNHS dominating the play and creating lots of chances. Ramsay grabbed his second of the game and Hill neatly rounded the keeper to make it 4-0 after some excellent play in midfield from Nathan Little and Jonah Kenny. All-in-all, a solid start and some notable performances by a couple of students making their Senior Saints’ debuts – Bo Coulter, Aaron Chadwick, Aidan Pickering and Liam Chilcott to name a few. Next game is home against KWC on Thursday after school.
