We kicked off our university visit bright and very early, gathering at the Sea Terminal at 7:15am—an hour that some of our students didn’t realise actually existed. There were a few bleary eyes, several half-awake conversations, and at least one student trying to eat breakfast while still wearing their eye mask.

The boat journey across to Heysham was smooth, if a little sleepy. Some students took the opportunity to top up on sleep, while others stared out at the Irish Sea with the dazed expression of someone wondering if it’s too early for a second breakfast (it wasn’t).

Once ashore, we hopped on a coach headed for Lancaster University. Despite thew delay due to a closure on the M6, we arrived slightly later than initially planned but we were met with an itinerary impressively organised by Jake and his team. The day began with a warm welcome from Jake who gave a fantastic insight into university life, followed by a campus tour that left many students picturing themselves strolling between lectures with a coffee in hand and deadlines just far enough away to feel optimistic.

After a great start, we hit the road again and made our way to Edge Hill University to meet the ever-welcoming Niamh and her team. Despite the long delay due to the ongoing closure of the M6, we were met by the student ambassadors who swiftly took us for our evening meal and there were murmurs of “Can we come here just for the food?”—before heading to our accommodation to check in for the week.

Not ones to wind down too quickly, many of the lads powered through to their gym inductions (biceps were flexed, forms were filled), while the rest of the group took the chance to explore the site. The evening wrapped up with an enthusiastic game of ultimate frisbee near the accommodation—competitive spirit, questionable throwing techniques, and plenty of laughter all included.

With eyelids drooping and energy well spent, everyone was in bed by 10:30pm, ready to recharge for what promises to be a packed and exciting week ahead.

More adventures to come... we can’t wait!
