The Year 7 Rugby teams played their final fixtures of the half-term in a fiercely contested Douglas derby against Ballakermeen. With all players new to rugby this year, the progress both teams have made is truly commendable.
St. Ninian’s made a fast start, with some sharp play from Lucas C at fly-half and powerful running from Toby S resulting in two early tries. Ballakermeen responded well, capitalising on some missed tackles and less effective work at the breakdown from St. Ninian’s to score their first try. Continued defensive lapses led to a second Ballakermeen try, and the pressure was mounting as the half-time whistle blew.
Captain Sebastian D led by example throughout, and his strong, determined running proved crucial as he powered over for a third try. Ballakermeen remained dominant at the ruck, and St. Ninian’s were occasionally caught watching instead of rejoining the defensive line, allowing their opponents to maintain momentum. However, big tackles from Leo M, Sam D, and Liam W helped keep Ballakermeen at bay. Improved urgency at the breakdown and quicker play saw Sebastian D cross the line for two more tries, giving St. Ninian’s some much-needed breathing room. Ballakermeen finished strongly with a well worked try of their own, but the Saints held on for a narrow and hard-fought victory.
We now look ahead to the rematch in the Douglas Cup on November 29th. Well done to all involved!
