The Senior Girls football team played in the annual inter-schools tournament at The Bowl on Thursday afternoon. Their first game was against an excellent QEII side who had chances in the first half, but great defending from Olivia Davis, Hanako Henson and Taylor Joughin kept them at bay. Goalkeeper Willow Heaton was also called into action several times. But with only a few minutes left, a Lois Coppell corner was superbly controlled and smashed home by Sorcha O'Brien to win the game 1-0. Next up were Castle Rushen who, again, had some good players. But the pacey Jess Bergquist found space in the middle after some great build up play from Lucy O'Connor to cooly slot home to take another 1-0 win. The third game was against KWC where the Saints really showed their class, dispatching the Southerners 5-0. Goals from Captain Poppy Gerrard (2), Sorcha & Lula-Belle Findlay. After a rest game the final opponents were local rivals Ballakermeen. With the girls knowing that a win would seal the Championship, they didn't disappoint. Coppell was dominant in the middle and set up Poppy for the first. The girls were relentless with their pressure, and never looked like conceding. Poppy added two more goals to complete her hat-trick and win the game 3-0! A fitting way for the Captain to sign off her St. Ninian's football story in style! She went on to lift the Shield, deserved Champions for 2025! Well done girls, it was a pleasure to witness such a strong performance and real team spirit all afternoon!
