Students at St. Ninian's celebrated Pi Day (March 14th) with engaging activities during maths lessons. Pi Day recognises the mathematical constant π, widely known for its connection to circles and commonly written as 3.14, matching the date.
As part of the celebrations, students tackled puzzles, solved challenges, and discussed the significance of π in mathematics. One highlight featured a collaborative project in which students assembled a giant paper chain representing π's decimal digits - 1740 of them! Each colour of paper matched a different number from 0 to 9, letting the colour sequence in the chain visually depict the digits of π.
By linking the coloured strips together in the correct order, students built an impressive chain that demonstrated how π continues infinitely without repeating. The activity encouraged teamwork, attention to detail, and a creative way of visualising mathematics, while also bringing the school community together to celebrate Pi Day.
