The Senior Boys Rugby team had their first home match on today against the private school boys from King William's College. The game got off to a frantic start with both teams showing promise in attack but cancelling each other out with some good defensive play, it was still 0-0 with 15 minutes gone. The deadlock was finally broken when some sustained pressure from the Saints' forwards forced a scrum close to the KWC line, where scrum half Cole Donnelly found a gap in the back line and dove over for the first try. 5-0 to the Saints at half time.
The second half started better for KWC as they found space on the right to go over and convert, 5-7 to the College. St. Ninian's fought back though with more strong running from the ever reliable captain Stephan De Beer, Ben Wilkinson and Sam Barnett to name a few. Donnelly was having a great game and making constant line breaks from half back and eventually the pressure was too much for the Southerners, as De Beer took a quick penalty to go over in the corner. 10-7 Saints. Soon after, a great run from winger Peter Lloyd was picked up by Monty Russell who was having an action packed game at fly half, he went over to increase the lead to 15-7. As King William's tired the boys from 'Bema' broke away again and the Man of the Match Donnelly grabbed his second of the game converted well by Wilkinson for a final score of 22-7 and another big win for the Saints.
Special mentions to Euan Dean who made an amazing try-saving tackle and Alex Pannell and Cam Strickett-Morling who had to come off injured; let's hope they're fit for next week's big final league game against local rivals Ballakermeen!
