On Tuesday, the Y10s played Ramsey Grammar competing for the prestigious Y10 football shield, a trophy that’s been used in schoolboy football since 1893. Following a close league game that finished 2-2, the final proved to be a close encounter too. It was 0-0 at half time with both teams having chances, Keelan Redfearn making some excellent saves in what turned out to be his first and only game of the season. In the second half, St. Ninian’s started to control the game with captain Sam Corkill, Deaglan Blake and Alex Ringham linking up well. The Saints’ defence kept Ramsey at bay with Freddie Griffin having an outstanding performance at right back and Oishin Farrelly well organised in the centre. The first goal came somewhat fortuitously with the ever-dangerous Cameron Brew looping a cross-come-shot over the Ramsey keeper, off both posts and in. A second goal seemed inevitable, and from a corner Caleb Hewgill, who’d been a threat all afternoon, smashed the ball left footed high into the top corner which took the game away from Ramsey. Ryan Nelson worked tirelessly all game and deserves a mention, but the team decided to award Freddie Griffin the Man of the Match, but overall a superb team performance.
