Last week saw the start of the rugby season for inter-school sport. The teams started their campaigns with a trip out west to QEII.
The lads started slowly and had to defend for long periods with QEII eventually scoring a converted try after good work from the Peel fly half. However, the boys from Capital City soon found their rhythm and scored two quick-fire tries through Eddie Plaatjies and Tristhan Ariola. Cameron Brew then added a third which he converted himself to give the Saints a 17-7 half time lead. With captain Akira Pascual picking up an injury, vice-captain Adam Horsey really stepped up to the plate and had a superb match. The second half saw St. Ninian’s really take the game away from QEII with Horsey scoring a try as well as two further tries each for Plaatjies and Brew meaning both scored hattricks. Brew also added three more conversions before QEII scored a late consolation try. A brilliant first win by a score of 48-12, with some excellent performances from Ariola, Plaatjies, Brew, Micah Clarricoats, Dylan Zackorecki and Nathan Wylie to name a few. The whole team played superbly well but the stand out performer was Adam Horsey who claims the Man of the Match.
The Y9 boys enjoyed a competitive match with Lewis Cairney opening the scoring in the early stages and Liam Blake slotting the conversion. Some excellent defending from the Saints kept QEII to single try, in particular George Leece, Ollie Kent, Zohar Shalem and Lewis Cannon. However, the westerners went again just before the break to take a 12-7 lead into half time. QEII started strong after the interval and scored three unanswered tries until the last 10 minutes when St. Ninian’s came fighting back with tries from the excellent Jack Cowin and Zohar Shalem, with captain Travis Bradshaw kicking the final conversion. In the end, time ran away and a narrow 26-19 defeat, but plenty of positives for the Y9s first rugby match in two years. Well done lads.
Next week we head to sunny Ramsey for what should be another competitive set of fixtures.
