LIt in Colour is a programme run by Pearson UK, Penguin Books and The Runnymede Trust to promote diversity in the English Literature Curriculum. The aim of this programme is ‘to increase student access to more books by writers of colour.’ This project aims to support British schools ‘to make the teaching and learning of literature more inclusive.’
We at St. Ninian’s High School applied for this prestigious programme, last summer. We were successful in our application and Penguin Books UK awarded us with a library donation of 200 books (both fiction and non-fiction) written by Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic writers catering for all Key Stages. Our English Department received complimentary copies of the novel Beloved by the American writer Toni Morrison, and other resources to be used by our A-Level and GCSE students. We intend to take this project forward with our A-Level English Literature students.
At SNHS, the Lit in Colour Project is one of many in-school initiatives to promote inclusivity and celebrate diversity through curricular and extra-curricular projects. The rationale behind our curricular and extra-curricular incentives is our steadfast commitment to diversity and inclusion, taking into consideration the increasingly cosmopolitan nature of the Isle of Man.
