Our students enjoyed an exciting and inspiring visit to Greenlight TV this week, gaining an insight into the world of professional broadcasting and production.

The trip was a special reward for the students who were chosen as winners of the BBC School Report project in their Computing and English lessons. Their excellent news reports earned them the opportunity to see how producers, editors and technical staff produce coverage of major sporting events.

The day began with an introduction to the company’s impressive portfolio of work, including highlights from the Isle of Man TT and major sporting events from around the world. Students were fascinated to see how Greenlight’s production teams capture, edit, and deliver such high-quality programming for international audiences.

Following this introduction, students were taken on a guided tour of the studios. They explored the Live Galleries, where they learned about live event coverage and bonded-sim technologies; the Edit and Graphics Suites, where they saw how video and visual effects are assembled; and even the tape machines and archives, where they discovered how television production has evolved from analogue to digital.

Students then had the exciting opportunity to take part in a series of hands-on workshops, trying out different roles within television production. Each group had the chance to experience a key part of the broadcasting process:

Editing – cutting together video clips under the guidance of a professional editor.

Graphics – creating their own on-screen name graphics.

Live Broadcast – planning and recording a two-minute live interview.

Voiceover Recording – writing and performing a short introduction in a real recording booth.

After an action-packed morning, everyone gathered for refreshments, before watching the finished recordings that they had helped produce – a memorable moment for all!

The visit to Greenlight TV offered our students a unique, hands-on experience of the media industry, sparking curiosity, creativity, and perhaps even some future career ambitions.

We would like to extend our sincere thanks to the team at Greenlight TV for generously welcoming our students, sharing their expertise, and providing such an engaging and memorable experience.
