The Year 9 Football teams travelled away to Ballakermeen for their first ever 11-a-side fixtures. It proved to be a valuable learning experience and an encouraging afternoon for both squads.
The A team took some time to adapt to the larger pitch and increased space, finding themselves 2–0 down early on. A change in formation, combined with the introduction of James L, helped swing momentum in the Saints’ favour. The response was immediate, as St. Ninian's scored twice in quick succession before the break. The first goal came from excellent hold-up play by James L, who showed great awareness to square the ball across goal for Aaron C to calmly slot home. The second saw the roles reversed, with Aaron C turning provider and returning the favour for James L to finish, bringing the scores level at 2–2 at half-time.
In the second half, Ballakermeen capitalised on a mistake to regain the lead, before adding a fourth shortly afterwards. St. Ninian's responded well, with Leon W pulling a goal back through a powerful bullet header from a James C corner. Bobby D was outstanding in goal, producing a number of fine saves to keep the Saints firmly in the contest. Despite a spirited finish, the game ended 4–3 to Ballakermeen, but there was plenty of positives and clear progress to take forward into the next fixture.
The B team delivered a stunning performance of their own, scoring three well-worked goals in a deserved 3–1 victory. Oisin F, Xander A, and Max W were all on the scoresheet in an excellent team display.
Well done to all players involved for their effort, commitment, and attitude throughout the afternoon.
