St Ninian’s Year 7s produced three fiercely contested matches against a strong Castle Rushen side, with plenty of physicality, committed defence and some excellent rugby on display.
The A team were involved in an outstanding defensive battle. Strong tackling, an improved defensive line and excellent work at the breakdown allowed the Saints to defend for long periods and win possession at crucial moments. In attack, St Ninian’s repeatedly tested the Castle Rushen defence but struggled to find the final breakthrough. A little more width and creativity may have opened the door, but Castle Rushen defended superbly, with a single first-half try proving the difference. Castle Rushen won 1–0 in an excellent contest between two committed sides. J. Arthur-Faragher and P. Caylo impressed, but every player worked hard and made important contributions.
The B team produced another cracking encounter. Both sides carried strongly and defended with real commitment, but St Ninian’s looked particularly dangerous when moving the ball into space. J. Cornah and C. Benham were heavily involved as the Saints edged a close contest 3–2.
The C team also competed superbly in another tight game. B. Birch and L. Syme produced some outstanding individual moments, with strong carries and determined defensive work, but Castle Rushen eventually edged the contest.
Three competitive games provided another significant step forward for the Year 7 squad. The biggest improvement was in the Saints’ defensive organisation, tackling and work at the breakdown. The next challenge is to add greater attacking width and improve decision-making to turn pressure and possession into tries.
Well done to all the boys for their excellent effort and commitment!
