Last week, a cohort of sixteen Maths and Core Maths students travelled to London for MathsFest 2019.

On Monday, after flying to Gatwick and catching the train to St Pancras, we left our bags at our hotel and we headed out for the rest of the day. We went sightseeing around Westminster, including walking past Big Ben, the Houses of Parliament and Westminster Abbey. After this, we ate lunch next to the London Eye and then we headed for a quick visit to Trafalgar Square, before walking up to Covent Garden, where we ate dinner and had free time to look around the iconic market and shops in the area. In the evening, we watched ‘School of Rock’ at the Gillian Lynne Theatre, and we were all astounded by the show.

On Tuesday, after a hearty breakfast at the hotel, we took the Tube to Piccadilly Theatre for MathsFest. The day was split into several thought provoking sessions, where mathematicians spoke about their favourite areas of maths, ranging from calculus at Christmas to pigeons detecting breast cancer and prime numbers to why there are twelve notes in a musical octave! The day finished with us all singing ‘Best Song Ever’ by One Direction; the event was enjoyed by all. We carried on our sightseeing adventure afterwards, where we took pictures of Buckingham Palace and Horse Guards Parade. For dinner, we all managed to eat together at Frankie and Benny’s, and we spent the evening shopping on Oxford Street and Regent Street.

On Wednesday, we travelled to the Science Museum, where we appreciated exhibitions about Maths, Humans and the Atmosphere. We took a walk through Hyde Park and we had just enough time for a Nando’s before rushing back to the hotel to pick up our bags and then heading back to the airport to make our way home. Many thanks to Miss White for organising the trip and Mr Thrussell for his expertise of London Transport.
