Yesterday Year 12 A Level Politics students took a trip down to the legislative buildings to find out how the government system on the Isle of Man operates. Students were met by the President of Tynwald, Mr Steve Rodan who welcomed them and gave them a brief introduction to how the Manx parliament came into existence and its long history. After this there was a tour of all three chambers, House of Keys, Legislative Council and Tynwald Court with an introduction to what happens in each chamber. Dr Allinson, MHK explained the workings of Tynwald to students and gave an insight into the day to day life of an MHK. After the tours the students watched the sitting for an hour and were able to see for themselves various Council members fielding questions in a lively exchange between members. Students are now able to use this information to make some interesting comparisons between the UK and Manx systems of government and democracy.
