Welcome to the Psychology Department, which consists of four subject specialist teachers (Miss Sharpe, Miss McIntosh, Mrs Gore and Miss Murray) who are passionate about Psychology. We have successfully run the A-Level course at St Ninian’s for 12 years. Its popularity continues to grow. In more recent years we have also welcomed students from Ballakermeen who have also been able to access the course successfully. You can expect high quality teaching, access to a wide range of resources and the guidance and support you need to succeed. We aim to share our knowledge with you through engaging lessons, in the hope of igniting a love for the subject, one that we all share.
Psychology allows us to examine human behaviour from many different approaches, often the things we learn challenge our understanding of our own behaviours and that of others. The lessons you will learn from studying Psychology will be life-long. Research underpins Psychology as a Science, thus you will be taught the elements of the scientific process, as well as carry out your own research tasks. In class you will be given the opportunity to debate topics like, is free will an illusion? Are we a product of nature or nurture? You will examine issues surrounding research such as culture and gender bias. You will look for and find answers, but also realise that sometimes there is no answer - this subject really will open your mind.
Students who study psychology will do so alongside most other subjects, as it compliments many disciplines e.g. science, maths, English and the humanities. Post A-level many of our students choose to study psychology at a more advanced level completing degrees, masters etc. We have students who are successfully following a career in clinical psychology, therapy, neuroscience to name a few. Equally our students gain transferable skills and knowledge that has led them into careers in marketing, education and law.
