Today the Sixth Form Debate Committee welcomed four MHKs as guest speakers for their final debate of the academic year.

Speaking for the motion, 'The Isle of Man should take its fair share of Syrian refugees’, were Daphne Caine & Bill Shimmins against David Ashford and Rob Callister who put forward opposing arguments to an audience of Sixth Form and Year 11 students, as well as members of staff.

All four speakers spoke very strongly in favour of their very different points of view, as well as informing the audience of some of the details and real-life stories behind the headlines. Once the floor was ‘open’, both students and staff asked a range of challenging questions which led to some lively debate amongst the speakers.

Thanks go out to the Debate Committee – Sorcha Osborne, Molly Steele, Orry Kennaugh, Cameron O’Dea, Ellie Jackson and Anya Dawson - for organising this special event. An extra thank you should also be given to Sorcha, who made a very capable chair.

We look forward to continuing the tradition of running a debate club at St. Ninian’s with a new committee next year.
