Our Level 3 Food Science and Nutrition (Certificate in Year 12 followed by Diploma in Year 13) is an exciting new course. Year 12 pupils will study Unit 1, Meeting Nutritional Needs of Specific Groups, which will be assessed in a 90 minute written exam in June, and a 9.5 hour piece of controlled assessment which will be a 3 course meal for 2 people from one of the design briefs issued.

Topics covered in Year 12 include:

Understanding the importance of food safety.

Understanding properties of nutrients.

Understanding the relationship between nutrients and the human body and be able to plan nutritional requirements.

In Year 13 pupils will study Unit 2, Ensuring Food is Safe to Eat, which is mandatory and is externally assessed by an 8 hour timed supervised assessment. Students have a choice for the final unit, Unit 3 Experimenting to Solve Food Production Problems OR Unit 4 Current Issues in Food Science and Nutrition.

Studying one of the two optional units will allow pupils the opportunity to study subjects of particular interest or relevance to them, building on previous learning and experiences.

A qualification in food and nutrition is relevant to many industries and job roles. Care providers and nutritionists in hospitals use this knowledge, as do sports coaches and fitness instructors. Hotels and restaurants, food manufacturers and government agencies also use this understanding to develop menus, food products and policies that support healthy eating initiatives. Many employment opportunities within the field of food science and nutrition are available to graduates.

Throughout the course, students are required to cook at least once a week and, on some occasions, more than one dish at a time.
