Frequently asked questions

How will grades will be determined?

This year grades for students who are completing courses will be determined by their schools instead of sitting summer exams.

Grades will be determined using a range of evidence that may include coursework, mock examinations and class-based tests as well as other evidence produced during the course.

Student grades will be holistic, underpinned with evidence. Schools are required to follow very strict procedures to ensure grading is fair.

When will students find out their grades?

Awarding organisations (Exam Boards) will issue the grades in August following moderation across Examination Centres.

This year’s results days will be:

  • Level 3 Qualifications (A2/AS) Tuesday 10th August 2021
  • Level 1 and 2 Qualifications (GCSE) Thursday 12th August 2021

The WJEC (Wales) has instructed school to share provisional grades with students, before they are submitted to the WJEC. All other Awarding organisations have instructed school NOT to share provisional grades.

Will exam certificates for Summer 2021 look different?

Exam certificates will look the same as any other year as the rules around the awarding of grades this year will be stringent and highly regulated.

Will there be an appeal process for results Summer 2021?

If a student considers an error has been made in determining their grade, they have a right to appeal.

There are two stages to the appeals process. The first stage is a Centre Review. The second stage is an appeal to the awarding organisation (submitted by the centre of the candidates behalf).

If the student or centre considers that the awarding organisation has made a procedural error, they can apply to the Exam Procedures Review Services (EPRS) to review the process undertaken by the awarding organisation.
