This July, Year 10 and Year 12 students will be performing Federico Garcia Lorca’s final play, The House of Bernarda Alba in the Upper School Drama Studio.
This intense and claustrophobic drama hinges on the eponymous matriarch imposing an eight-year period of mourning on her five daughters after the death of her husband. This effectively traps the young women and binds them to their ever possessive and controlling mother.
This production will emphasise the claustrophobic nature of the story by using a small, enclosed playing space in which the audience will surround the actors, forming barriers of spectators and creating a heated, paranoic landscape which continually entraps and limits the characters’ movements - like birds trapped in a cage.
Huge credit must go to the students who have been working tirelessly and with great determination on this challenging and thought-provoking play.
The performances will take place at 7 p.m. on the 6th, 7th and 8th July, and tickets are available now from the Upper School office.
