The Year 7s faced some tough fixtures against Castle Rushen last Wednesday, and once again showed just how much they are improving in a short space of time. The commitment to tackling and carrying the ball was fantastic from St. Ninian’s, and despite plenty of pressure from the travelling team, the Saints’ defence stood strong for long periods of the game.

The breakdown posed some challenges for St. Ninian’s, with Castle Rushen proving very effective in defence and quick to steal possession. As the game went on, the home side’s speed and strength at the ruck improved, responding well to early setbacks. However, a lack of support for the ball carriers meant that turnovers occurred at crucial moments, costing the team in red valuable attacking opportunities.

Despite some strong play from both sides, Castle Rushen came out on top, scoring two well worked tries to secure a 2–0 win. A low scoring game at this age group, which highlighted the defensive strength on both sides.

Meanwhile, the B team played out an epic game on the adjacent pitch, showcasing excellent tackling, strong rucking, and great evasive skills. SNHS controlled the first half, but Castle Rushen fought back, getting within one try and piling on the pressure. The Saints held firm in defence and managed to hold onto a narrow but well-deserved win.

The C team also had a tough match, played in great spirit and full of learning opportunities. Castle Rushen were strong opponents, and although the home team started well, the game became challenging and the visitors pulled away on the scoreboard. For several of the boys, it was their first ever rugby match and their first time representing the school, which is a fantastic achievement in itself. The game was played in a great atmosphere, and with over 80 boys playing rugby across the three pitches, the St. Ninian’s fields were buzzing with energy and excitement.

All of the boys were invited to represent St. Ninian’s at the IOM U12 Rugby Festival on Sunday at Douglas RUFC and it was great to see lots of boys there! Well done to all involved in representing St. Ninian's.
