The Senior Basketball season tipped off in exciting fashion as St Ninian’s began their campaign looking to build on last year’s success. The Saints started a little sluggish, struggling to secure rebounds early on, while QEII came out strong with an aggressive full-court press. However, St Ninian’s soon found their rhythm, using solid fundamental play, sharp passing, smart movement, and strong finishes at the rim, to take a 14–9 lead at the end of the first quarter. Oliver impressed with his clever off-ball movement, while Rowan capitalised with some confident finishes around the basket.
As the game progressed, the intensity continued to rise. The Saints gradually took control thanks to Gabe’s dominance on the boards and Raf’s relentless defensive pressure, which forced several turnovers. QEII continued to battle hard, keeping the score within reach through some well executed layups. In the final quarter, the Saints truly came alive. A few clutch three-pointers helped open up the lead, with Dylan providing great outlet options on the fast break. The team’s rebounding, both offensive and defensive, really swung the momentum their way, while tight trapping defence in the paint led to several steals and quick scores.
A special mention goes to Brandon, who made his debut in the senior squad and looked completely at home on the court, an impressive first outing! Overall, it was a fantastic team performance and a great way to start the season. With a few areas to fine-tune, the Saints look set for another strong year ahead.
Final Score: St Ninian’s 54 – 40 QEII - Let’s go Saints!
