A group of budding AS Mathematicians have returned from their trip to London, full of intriguing new mathematical concepts they never knew existed, and of course, the experience of life in the capital! The main focus of the trip was to attend a day-long mathematical extravaganza held at Piccadilly Theatre. Our Sixth Form students joined many others who had chosen to take the subject at A Level to hear some of the best maths speakers in the world. The students' favourites included a talk by Dr James Grime on the 'Enigma and the Secret World of Code Breaking'. Another favourite was Aoife Hunt, a mathematician who investigates the way people move when they are in crowds to help make big events such as Glastonbury and Wembley safer. She introduced the connection between crowd flow and quadratic equations. Finally, a digital artist who has directed BAFTA winning project, Seb Lee-Delisle. Seb demonstrated how to use simple coding combined with Maths, to create stunning visual effects.
Whilst in London, it was only appropriate that they had the opportunity to take in some of the sites! The Houses of Parliament, the London Eye, Trafalgar Square, Buckingham Palace, the Natural History Museum, the Science Museum, an indulgent evening with chocolate brownie milkshakes, a visit to the theatre to see School of Rock, and of course, the M&M store! All in just three days! Many thanks to Mrs Gore for arranging this opportunity for the students.
